StudioAC's South Bay House Reinterprets Rural Canadian Architecture

With the South Bay House project, StudioAC transforms a flat Ontario landscape into a dynamic interplay of built form and natural surroundings. The design organizes living spaces across three intersecting rectangular volumes that strategically manipulate spatial perception and environmental conditions.
StudioAC rotated the traditional floor plan orientation to emphasize shorter dimensions. The architects created elongated 48-foot facades that dissolve visual barriers between interior and exterior spaces. This configuration, combined with carefully positioned windows, ensures unobstructed views of the surrounding groves and shoreline from key gathering areas. The roof's three mirrored shed structures serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. It provides solar shading and weather protection while introducing sculptural dimensionality to the otherwise flat terrain. Material selections reinforce the project's conceptual framework, with uniform plywood cladding establishing visual continuity and tiled wet areas marking deliberate transitions between program zones.
