Barn-Form Family Homes

The Twisted House by Andy Martin Merges Barn Form and Landscape

The Twisted House by Andy Martin merges barn form and landscape in a zinc-clad retreat sited in Benenden, Kent. The 290-square-metre home perches on a rural three-hectare plot where traditional Kent blackened barns inspired both materiality and silhouette. Recycled steel panels wrap the exterior while chestnut end walls pay homage to local vernacular barns. A subtle twist along the roof ridge echoes the rolling field slopes and draws daylight into interior spaces.

Inside the house, rooms align along a north-south axis to balance sun and shade with living zones facing the sunlit landscape and service areas tucked away. Polished concrete floors, pale birch cabinetry, and deep green storage walls form a calm material palette. Full-height glazing frames views of woodland and a handmade lake to connect the interior to the exterior. By adapting form to terrain and choosing materials rooted in place, Twisted House demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can amplify its natural surroundings.
