StudioAC Designs Pale Cedar Duplex for Multi-Generational Living

StudioAC’s Junction Semi reimagines a Toronto property as a light-filled, multi-generational duplex for three generations under one roof. Built on the foundation and partial walls of a former religious building, the design introduces a pale cedar exterior, double-gable roof, and a central courtyard that draws daylight into the deep floor plan. The two side-by-side units share outdoor and functional spaces — including a foyer, garage, and rooftop garden — while maintaining private living areas.
Inside, skylit stairwells lead to open-plan living, dining, and kitchen spaces at the sunken main level, with bedrooms above and terraces extending from private baths. A Japanese maple anchors one upper terrace, inspired by the client’s memory of bathing while hearing wind through leaves. Finished in a monochromatic palette that emphasizes texture over color, the home balances shared connection with personal retreat, offering a thoughtful, scale-sensitive addition to its West End streetscape.
