'Sluishuis' is a new residential development set to be built in the neighborhood of IJburg, on the eastern edge of Amsterdam. What sets Sluishuis apart from other developments in the area is just how far east the building will be. IJ Lake abuts the eastern end of Amsterdam, and Sluishuis is set to be built on a port in the water.
The development is a joint project by two architecture firms: 'BIG' and 'BARCODE Architects.' The design features a series of tessellating terraces with a triangular archway that allows water from the lake to enter a communal courtyard. According to Bjarke Ingels, the founder of BIG, the complex will be a "building inside the [IJ Lake] port, with a port inside the building."
