Bardstown and Mars Released Its Single Malt Japanese Blend

— May 26, 2026 — Marketing
Bardstown Bourbon Company and Japan’s Mars distillers released ‘Distillery Reserve Mars Single Malt Japanese Blend,’ a limited 375mL expression priced at $99.99. It was created using a first-of-its-kind process in which Japanese single malt and Kentucky bourbon were co-aged in the same barrel for 12 months. The Bardstown Bourbon Mars Japanese whiskey blend draws from Komagatake single malt aged in plum barrels and Tsunuki single malt aged in sakura cherry wood barrels and combines them with Bardstown bourbons aged 10 and 16 years.

At 109.8 proof, the whiskey opens with caramelized plum and roasted malt before moving into baked cherry and toasted oak. It is available exclusively at Bardstown’s distillery and Louisville Tasting Room starting May 29.

Bardstown and Mars show how co-aging whiskey styles from different traditions can create a product that feels both rooted in heritage and fresh in execution.

Trend Themes

  1. Cross-cultural Co-aging — Co‑aging disparate regional spirits in the same barrel produces hybrid flavor architectures that challenge traditional single-origin definitions.
  2. Limited-edition Premium Collaborations — Collaborative, small-batch releases between renowned producers create collectible scarcity that elevates brand prestige and secondary market dynamics.
  3. Barrel Wood Innovation — Experimentation with unconventional wood types and prior barrel uses yields distinctive aromatic profiles that expand consumer palates beyond classic oak-driven expressions.

Industry Implications

  1. Distilling & Spirits Retail — Retailers and distillers face opportunities to market provenance-driven, co‑aged releases as premium experiences that command higher price points.
  2. Luxury Hospitality & Tasting Experiences — High-end bars and tasting rooms can host exclusive pourings of experimental blends that enhance guest engagement through storytelling of cross-cultural production methods.
  3. Wood Cooperage & Barrel Manufacturing — Coopers and barrel suppliers may develop bespoke staves and finishing casks tailored to controlled co‑aging processes to deliver reproducible hybrid flavor outcomes.
