The COVID-19 pandemic has caused many consumers to panic buy, leading to nationwide shortages of essential items such as toilet paper and hand soap. As a result, many consumers from the elderly population are left scrambling for scraps at grocery stores. To ensure this vulnerable segment has access to these necessities, Costco is following the lead of other retailers — such as Shoppers Drug Mart and Publix — to launch senior-specific shopping hours on Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m.
Not only does this ensure seniors have access to food and other products, but it also limits the number of individuals they have to interact with while shopping, an important factor in maintaining physical distance from others.
