Exposed Material-Inspired Cafés

Shell + Core Embodies the Tadao Ando Aesthetic for its Otaku Café

Abu Dhabi’s Al Qana district has expanded its waterfront offerings with the launch of Otaku Café, a concept designed by Shell + Core. The café’s interior design embraces a bold fusion of raw materiality and organic textures, creating a visually striking space that blends brutalist aesthetics with natural warmth. Notably, the Otaku Café features inspiration from Japanese architect Tadao Ando.

The design balances modern minimalism and an inviting atmosphere by incorporating concrete volumes alongside softer, sculptural elements. A wooden column serves as a focal point for the room, casting shadows on the walls and floors.

A key differentiator is the café’s embrace of the Japanese wabi-sabi philosophy, which highlights the beauty of imperfection through exposed natural materials. Additionally, the design draws inspiration from its waterfront setting, integrating fluid, flowing forms that mimic water’s movement.
