Dahee Kim Challenges Traditional School Uniform Designs in Korea
Kalina Ned — July 6, 2020 — Art & Design
One of the biggest objections to school uniform designs is that they halt the right for personal self-expression through one's unique style preferences. This is exactly what Central Saint Martins fashion student Dahee Kim wanted to address with her graduate collection.
Kim is inspired by the traditional school uniform designs, particularly in South Korea, and she aims to "reject the strict rules and standards that 'well-behaved' students have to abide by" through an experimental capsule. The garments are enhanced by unusual items that the designer incorporated to shake the rigidity in style. Dahee Kim develops two designs for her graduate collection. One boasts legwarmers and a beanbag chair strapped to the back of the uniform. The second is an all-in-one bodysuit that features psychedelic patterns.
