The How to Grow a Refrigerator Rethinks Sustainable Cooling

The How to Grow a Refrigerator project is a conceptual appliance by designer Audrey Levy that explores bio-based materials and electricity-free cooling. Also titled Xero Cool, the compact refrigerator replaces conventional plastic foam insulation with bacterial cellulose xerogel, a lightweight, compostable material grown using bacteria. Combined with felted wool and macrofluidic cooling panels, the design reimagines refrigeration through renewable materials while presenting a softer, organic appearance that contrasts with traditional household appliances.

The concept pairs the insulated structure with a solar-thermal absorption cooling system that uses heat collected from the sun to power refrigeration without continuous electrical input. Levy proposes using bio-based absorbents and refrigerants alongside passive cooling technology to reduce reliance on conventional refrigeration systems and associated emissions. It is developed as part of the designer's 2026 Biodesign graduate project at Central Saint Martins.
