Reclaimed Timber Waterfront Saunas

Rare Collectiv Builds Skroget as a Boat-Shaped Sauna in Norway

Rare Collectiv built 'Skroget' in Båtsfjord, Norway, as a community sauna that also extends the harbor into public space for people by the waterfront. Instead of centering everything on a single hot room, the project uses 19 leaning timber frames to shape a boatlike deck and sheltered path, placing the sauna within a larger place to walk, sit, and gather.

The structure runs about 40 meters and uses mostly reclaimed wood from a municipal building dismantled locally, giving it a direct material link to the town. A continuous path links the entrance to the sauna and places changing and washing areas along the way.

Reclaimed municipal lumber makes Skroget a useful model for towns that want one waterfront building to serve shelter, gathering, and wellness. The 40-meter layout shifts public saunas toward civic spaces that organize seating and circulation, not just heat.

Civic Sauna Spaces
Public wellness concepts are expanding into multifunctional gathering places that combine heat, seating, circulation, and waterfront access for broader community use.
Reclaimed Timber Architecture
Locally salvaged wood is giving civic buildings lower-impact material narratives while creating distinct design identities tied to place and municipal reuse.
Waterfront Wellness Infrastructure
Harbor-edge amenities are evolving from passive promenades into active social destinations where bathing culture, shelter, and public space intersect.

Sectors Adopting This

Architecture
Design studios can reinterpret small civic buildings as layered public experiences that merge wellness programming with sculptural, site-specific structures.
Urban Planning
Municipal waterfront strategies are gaining new models for compact interventions that extend public access while supporting social, recreational, and restorative uses.
