Puusauna by Jaakko Torvinen Uses Charred Trunks as Structural Columns

— March 10, 2026 — Art & Design
The Puusauna by Jaakko Torvinen is a sauna building located on Kaunissaari island in the Finnish archipelago, designed for a private client as a contemporary interpretation of traditional log construction. The Puusauna by Jaakko Torvinen uses whole tree trunks as vertical structural supports that hold up a handmade zinc roof, separating the roof structure from the settling log walls below. This approach allows the timber frame to shrink naturally over time while the canopy roof remains stable.

The building combines a two-storey wood-fired sauna with a minimalist tea room positioned to overlook the surrounding forest and sea views. Charred timber cladding creates a darker interior inside the sauna, referencing traditional Finnish smoke saunas, while the tea room uses hand-hewn log walls and birch end-grain flooring. Custom furniture by Finnish designer Teppo Lakaniemi and artworks by Päivi Tuovinen and Toni R Toivonen complete the interior.

Trend Themes

  1. Adaptive Settling Timber Construction — A structural strategy that separates stable roof canopies from settling log walls to accommodate natural timber shrinkage creates new possibilities for long-lasting, low-maintenance wood buildings.
  2. Charred Timber Aesthetics — Use of scorched cladding and darkened interiors evokes traditional smoke-sauna atmospheres while delivering durable, low-maintenance surfaces and distinctive material-led branding.
  3. Integrated Sauna-retreat Architecture — Combining two-storey wood-fired saunas with minimalist tea rooms and framed landscape views produces compact experiential retreats that fuse ritual, wellness and high-design hospitality.

Industry Implications

  1. Prefabricated Timber Construction — Manufacturing systems that accommodate whole-trunk elements and differential settling could enable scalable, engineered timber components for bespoke yet repeatable buildings.
  2. Hospitality and Wellness Retreats — Boutique operators curating timber-forward sauna and tea-room experiences may attract high-value guests seeking immersive, design-led health and nature getaways.
  3. Sustainable Material Supply Chains — Sourcing whole trunks, charred cladding and artisanal joinery points toward localized, traceable supply networks that prioritize low-impact wood materials and craft skills.
