Screen-Free Communication Concepts

Ishac Bertran Prototyped a Voice-Only, Fixed Location Phone

Inspired by the chunky handsets and coiled cords of retro phones, designer Ishac Bertran created a playful, safe phone concept for experiencing the nostalgic joy of talking on the phone without any of the screen time. Bertran, who leads the Interaction Design team at Seed Studio within Google Devices and Services, developed this voice-only fixed-location prototype for his daughter.

This design uses the Gemini Live API and lets kids call fictional characters like Kiki or Totoro. "When I saw my daughter's face the first time she called Kiki, I knew there was something interesting there," shared Bertan on LinkedIn. "But I'm still debating this feature, I'm not sure it belongs in the same box, or if it's needed at all."
