The Opinel No.8 Survival Knife Modernizes the Iconic Knife
Justin Lam — June 6, 2018 — Art & Design
Opinel has had a long history of stylish minimalist knives, but the Opinel No.8 Outdoor Survival knife shows that the company can still evolve and appeal to a more survivalist market. The survival knife still carries the classic silhouette of an Opinel, meaning the iconic handle shape, opening mechanism and locking ring have been preserved, but it ditches the classic wood handles for a Fibreglass-reinforced polyamide. This new material better protects the knife from shocks, humidity and extreme temperature, as well as integrating a survival whistle on the back.
The blade on the Opinel No.8 Outdoor Survival knife is comprised of a Sandvik 12C27 stainless steel which gives the knife incredibly durable properties. Thanks to the addition of chrome the blade is anti-corrosive and requires no special maintenance to withstand various elements.
