Carved Lava Couches

The Onyx Sofa Combines Raw Volcanic Rock with Advanced Engineered Material

The Onyx Sofa demonstrates how natural and cutting-edge materials are combined in order to establish aesthetic harmony. Looking at this contemporary bench, the slick and glossy left side is composed of carbon fiber; meanwhile, the rough and rugged right side is a hunk of hardened lava. The two are married together with great balance, despite the asymmetry of the piece and the very different textures and properties that the two sections possess.

For the Peugeot Design Lab, Pierre Gimbergues carved away at a porous block of volcanic stone, creating a sturdy base and the end of a smoothed seat and sculptural backrest. This is joined up flush with the comparatively lightweight crystalline material that extends elegantly from a polished bench into a slender footing.
