Foscarini Lava Lamps are a collection of suspension lights designed by Alberto and Francesco Meda that use recycled Italian lava stone as a primary material. Named Alicudi, Filicudi, and Panarea after Aeolian Islands formed by volcanic activity, the lamps repurpose surplus lava material from processing into a proprietary composite that is cast into distinct geometric silhouettes. The naturally porous texture and cratered surface of the volcanic material remain visible, giving each light a tactile, irregular finish that reflects its geological source. The lava composite is mixed with a binder and moulded into thin forms up to 8–10 millimetres thick, making it lighter than solid lava while preserving strength and expressive texture.
Foscarini collaborated with Naples-based stone specialist Ranieri to reclaim scrap material and integrate it into the lighting collection, celebrating waste as resource rather than discarding it. Although industrially produced, much of the process involves handwork that introduces subtle surface variations from piece to piece. When lit, the pendants cast a downward-focused glow; when unlit, they read as matte sculptural presences in space.
