The Norton House Traces Its Evolution from 1954 to a Modern Icon

— September 26, 2025 — Art & Design
The Norton House bridges mid-century promise and present challenge in a design that embraces water and structure. The original 1954 plan wove a creek into its plot, inspiring terraces, bridges, and full-height glazing that dissolve barriers between inside and out. Today, the house stands refashioned yet faithful, with modern systems and sensitive restorations reinforcing its poetic grounding.

The design firm Buff, Straub & Hensman organized the home around a post-and-beam system in Douglas fir and glass walls that frame shifting views of the creek. Terraces float above water, bridges connect wings, and sightlines draw you toward nature’s flow. Within, the original cork floors, built-in seating, and austere concrete walls meet new mechanical systems and lighting updates. The house endures as an architectural story in motion, one that studies continuity rather than revival, and teaches how buildings can evolve while remaining true to their core.
