The French Creek Workshops House is a residential project by Wittman Estes in Snohomish, Washington, designed as a single-level home and integrated creative studios for a newly retired couple. The residence sits on a former animal sanctuary adjacent to wetlands and was planned for ageing-in-place, eliminating stairs and incorporating wide thresholds and smooth circulation throughout.
Its organization centres around an outdoor courtyard sequence that links the main living spaces with dedicated workshops for woodworking, metalworking, glass art and other crafts, allowing daily creative practice to coexist with domestic life. The design responds to the cool, rainy Pacific Northwest climate with deep eaves and reflecting pools that capture rainwater as part of the landscape composition.
Materials throughout the house balance artistry with durability, combining locally sourced cedar and fir alongside terrazzo and sandblasted concrete. The floor plan and thoughtful transitions emphasize connection to surrounding gardens and natural terrain, while reflective water features and terracing create sheltered outdoor zones that link inside and out.
