The Ninefold installation by Hyojin Kwon, Jeremy Muller and Misri Patel transforms discarded PLA from fabrication labs into nine large-scale resonant forms produced through pellet-based additive manufacturing. Shredded plastic waste is blended with virgin material before being 3D printed into modular sculptural structures with distinct geometries, layered textures and mixed-batch color variations. Each form is tuned to a different harmonic frequency, creating a distributed sound field that changes as visitors move through the exhibition space. The installation draws on architectural and musical concepts that treat spatial arrangement as part of the listening experience.
The sculptures are fabricated in transportable modular sections that allow the installation to be reconfigured and exhibited in different locations. Visible layer lines and material variations remain exposed, emphasizing the recycled origin of the printed forms rather than concealing the manufacturing process. What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Recycled Acoustic Sculptures
- Waste-derived 3D-printed forms can turn circular materials into immersive cultural experiences that merge sustainability, sound and spatial design.
- Modular Exhibition Systems
- Transportable sculptural components create new possibilities for adaptable installations that can shift across venues without losing artistic or functional coherence.
- Visible Material Narratives
- Exposed layer lines and mixed-batch color variations position manufacturing traces as aesthetic features that communicate provenance and circular design value.
Sectors Adopting This
- Additive Manufacturing
- Pellet-based printing with recycled polymers expands industrial uses for fabrication waste by supporting large-scale, customizable architectural and artistic structures.
- Experiential Art
- Sound-responsive installations introduce immersive formats where visitor movement, acoustics and physical design combine to deepen engagement.
- Circular Materials
- Reclaimed PLA applications highlight how post-production plastic streams can gain premium relevance through design-led reuse and sensory performance.
