Robotic Coffee Tables

Let the Dog Out Transforms an Antique Table into a Sculptural Design

Let the Dog Out reimagines a 19th-century coffee table by combining an original wooden tabletop from the 1840s with four articulated aluminum legs repurposed from computer monitor stands. Created by Alexandre Veillon, the piece uses salvaged mechanical components to form a crouching canine-inspired silhouette, while silver chains suspended beneath the tabletop reference a dog's collar. Small metal fasteners remain visible across the antique timber surface, emphasizing the contrast between historic craftsmanship and industrial hardware through a deliberately hybrid construction.

The sculptural furniture piece explores the relationship between historical domestic objects and contemporary mechanical design using reclaimed materials rather than custom-engineered components. Accompanying presentation materials include technical-style illustrations, close-up studies of the articulated legs and photographs documenting the assembly process, extending the project's conceptual narrative beyond the object itself. The work combines antique furniture, recycled technology and animal-inspired forms into a collectible design piece that prioritizes material contrast and visual storytelling over conventional furniture function.
