'National Geographic Infographics' Shows the Magazine's Drawings
Joey Haar — December 21, 2016 — Art & Design
National Geographic, the science and natural history magazine, has been in publication for 128 years, and 'National Geographic Infographics' is a collection of illustrations that have appeared in the various issues over that time. The 480 page book includes hundreds of graphics from the famed magazine.
Since its inception in 1888, National Geographic has included artists' renderings of data and information -- what the internet has termed infographics. Though that term and others, like "data visualization," are considered neologistic, the old illustrations in National Geographic Infographics shows that they have existed for over a century in practice (if not in name.)
The book is divided into seven sections: History, The Planet, Being Human, Animal World, World of Plants, Science and Technology, and Space. Not only do the illustrations, which span the complete history of the publication, show varied information, but they are also an interesting insight into the history of graphic design over time.
