Interactive Buddha Pavilions

The Nanhai Buddha Pavilion Invites Visitors to Shape Its Walls

The Nanhai Buddha Pavilion is a contemplative structure designed by Chinese studio DoDesign to shelter a Buddha sculpture in Chongqing. Rather than creating a traditional religious monument, the pavilion features black-steel columns, gridded metal walls, and a flat timber roof punctuated by skylights that introduce filtered daylight. Thousands of loose cedar logs are inserted into the steel grid, forming interactive walls that visitors can rearrange over time while framing the central sculpture within an open, light-filled space.

Approximately 4,000 cedar logs were produced for the pavilion, though only half have been installed, allowing visitors to gradually complete and reshape the architecture through participation. The Nanhai Buddha Pavilion reflects Buddhist ideas of impermanence by encouraging continual change as the timber weathers and the wall compositions evolve.

Participatory Sacred Architecture
Religious and contemplative spaces are being reimagined as evolving environments where visitor interaction becomes part of the built form.
Modular Material Rituals
Loose, movable building components introduce new possibilities for symbolic engagement, maintenance, and community-authored spatial change.
Impermanent Design Aesthetics
Weathering materials and unfinished structures reflect a growing interest in architecture that visibly evolves over time rather than remaining fixed.

Where This Applies

Architecture
Cultural and spiritual projects can differentiate through adaptive structures that merge spatial design with public participation.
Religious Tourism
Destinations centered on contemplation may gain renewed relevance by offering visitors tactile, meaningful interactions with sacred sites.
Sustainable Materials
Natural timber systems present opportunities for low-impact construction concepts that highlight aging, reuse, and modular replacement.
