Doshi Retreat Opens at Vitra Campus in Weil Am Rhein

— November 7, 2025 — Art & Design
The Doshi Retreat at Vitra Campus in Weil am Rhein introduces a quiet space for reflection and material exploration. Designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architect Balkrishna Doshi in collaboration with Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof, it stands as his first completed work outside India and one of his final projects. The structure is formed from low-carbon steel panels that curve into two intersecting pathways, guiding visitors underground toward a circular chamber centered around a brass mandala.

The retreat’s design focuses on simplicity and sensory balance. Sound, light, and temperature shift subtly as visitors move through the space, creating a meditative rhythm that contrasts the industrial context of the campus. As the steel exterior weathers naturally, the structure will evolve with time, serving as both a physical and symbolic expression of Doshi’s enduring architectural philosophy.
