The Muskoka lakeside cottage melds rugged site with refined family living through a design that hugs its steep, maple-grove setting and embraces the raw contours of the Canadian Shield. Created by Barbora Vokac Taylor Architect for a multi-generation family, the three-level home nestles into the hillside rather than reshaping it—guiding views toward both forest and lake from every level. Its Shou Sugi Ban cedar cladding, dark zinc roof, and open-air Muskoka Room are layered to minimize environmental impact while framing natural light and water vistas.
Within, intimate family retreats sit alongside shared spaces: children’s bedrooms, loft hideaway, and study upstairs; open-plan kitchen, living, and dining oriented toward the lake on the middle level; and a lower-level spa, sauna, and recreation area that lead outdoors. Thoughtful materials—warm wood tones, concrete, patina-ready finishes—imbue the cottage with a quiet elegance that evolves with time and seasons.
