Hillside Lakeside Houses

The Counter-Slope House Steps into a Wooded Slope in Quebec

Counter-Slope House is a 4,530-square-foot residence designed by yh2 Architecture in Potton, Quebec. Completed in 2024, the home occupies a steep site along the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog. The design is organized into two volumes that follow the natural contours of the terrain, reducing the need for extensive land modification.

Dual-pitched roofs sit above each section and contribute to the building's low profile within the surrounding woodland landscape. A dense treeline separates the residence from the lake and shapes the views available from the interior.

Weathered cedar clads the exterior and helps the structure blend into its forested setting. Inside, white oak surfaces and exposed timber elements define the material palette. Windows are positioned to capture filtered views of the lake through the trees rather than direct panoramas across the water.
