Thom Fougere Studio and Bureau Tempo, a Montreal-based architectural design office, have collaborated on Pine Island Cottage. This serene family getaway is nestled on a secluded island in the heart of Georgian Bay, Ontario, where the interiors cascade along the island's sloped stone formations to mirror the textural richness of the natural world.
The spatial journey begins with a low, oak-lined entryway and gradually opens as floors terrace downward and ceiling height increases. This reveals a central living area that contains four distinct zones — kitchen, dining room, living room anchored by a fieldstone hearth, and an outdoor porch. All of these aspects are designed to encourage togetherness. Sleeping quarters situated at a higher point offer a peaceful refuge. The kitchen is anchored by a fieldstone island that evokes casual gatherings on rocky shores, with custom cabinetry crafted from white oak, walnut, and limestone.
