Usonian-Inspired Lake House Embraces Modest Scale and Deep Connection

The Usonian-inspired lake house by Specht Novak Architects is a modest 3,356-square-foot retreat that captures the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for affordable, functional design. Set on a former summer camp site in Milford, Pennsylvania, the home features long, low lines, charred Shou Sugi Ban wood siding paired with smooth stucco surfaces, and a harmonious blend of natural materials.

The design reveals a dual personality, with an introverted street facade featuring a deep, cantilevered porch and narrow ribbon windows, and a glass-walled lakeside elevation that opens fully to the view. A lakeside terrace and spa extend the living space into nature, offering both immersion and retreat. By drawing on Wright’s Usonian ideals without imitation, this lake house bridges historical architectural language and contemporary lakeside living with subtle, elegant restraint.
