A Redmond, Washington-based company by the name of Planetary Resources has successfully launched an asteroid-mining satellite that is designed to demonstrate and test the latest and greatest technologies that could rule the roost in the asteroid mining industry.
The satellite, which lifted off from the Indian Space Research Organization facility in southern India, features a battery of energy generation, instrumentation and communications technology. The satellite is more than capable of operating in autonomous mode, and can also send key data back to Earth.
With resources running scarce on Earth, asteroid-mining satellites are poised to become a key part of our industrial future. The Planetary Resources satellite is set to make its parent company an industry leader in this regard, carrying out demonstrations that will help inform the streamlining and upgrading of space mining tools going forward.
