Wrapped Bridge Installations

JR Transforms the Pont Neuf with the La Caverne Du Pont Neuf Artwork

French artist JR transformed the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris through a large-scale temporary installation titled La Caverne du Pont Neuf. The project covers sections of the historic bridge with printed stone imagery that creates the illusion of a carved rock cavern extending across the structure’s arches and passageways. The intervention references the bridge’s original stone construction while reinterpreting the landmark through layered photographic surfaces and temporary architectural wrapping techniques.

The installation marks 40 years since Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric in 1985. JR developed the project using large-format printed sheets installed directly across the bridge’s exterior surfaces and pedestrian routes overlooking the Seine. The visual treatment incorporates trompe-l’oeil textures, fissures, and sculpted rock formations that alter the appearance of the existing masonry while preserving full public access throughout the installation period.
