Floating City Networks

Justinian Khoo Envisioned Clusters of Floating Cities Called The Whales

Justinian Khoo, the second finalist in Dezeen's Redesign the World competition, proposed a network of floating cities "to provide freedom for nature on land." The cluster of envisioned cities, called The Whales, resemble pods of large marine mammals.

The proposed cities would run entirely on renewable energy, which will be harnessed from the sea, wind, and sun. Inhabitants of the cities would mainly use fish farming as a source of protein-rich food. The waste will be used to fertilize crops on floating farms. Inspired by the ocean's largest mammals, the floating cities are designed for human survival amidst a climate-changed planet. The project also aims to preserve the earth by removing human dwellings from the land.

Floating City Clusters
Creating clusters of floating cities can offer a new form of human dwellings that is not limited by land and promotes sustainability.
Renewable Energy Harnessing
Developing better technology for harnessing renewable energy sources such as wind, sun, and sea can unlock new possibilities for sustainable living.
Aquaculture-based Protein Sources
Using fish farming as the main source of protein-rich food in floating cities can drive innovation in aquaculture to meet the demand of growing populations.

Where This Applies

Sustainable Architecture
Creating structures that can sustain human life and promote environmental preservation can be a new demand in the architecture industry.
Renewable Energy Technology
Designing and developing new technologies for harnessing renewable energy sources can be a game changer for the energy industry.
Aquaculture
Innovating and improving fish farming techniques can drive growth in the aquaculture industry to meet the protein demands of growing populations.
