The Instagram mobile site has been given a huge upgrade that significantly ups its functionality. Now those who log onto Instagram.com using a smartphone will be able to post photos. This feature was not previously available on the Instagram mobile site before. Users still cannot upload videos, access filters, Stories or send direct messages. This move is seen by many as a play for users in developing markets.
In many developing markets it is both cheaper and easier for people to access the mobile web than to download apps. That's what's driving the expansion of the Instagram mobile site. As the app continues to battle Snapchat don't be surprised if further features are added to the mobile web experience. Now the question becomes whether Snapchat will respond in an attempt to grab new users or if it will continue to stay upmarket by creating products such as Spectacles and further enhancing its VR functionalities.
