An Italian cardiologist from the University of Rome Tor Vergata recently developed a new gelato recipe that is specially designed to improve athletic performance. While ice cream has never been considered the healthiest snack option, this powerful new pint may soon become the go-to choice for those looking to step up their game.
According to Professor Valerio Sanguigni, his research has shown that superfoods such as cocoa beans and green tea conserve antioxidants best at low temperatures. As a result, he came up with a special recipe for an antioxidant-rich gelato that improves athletic performance. He then tested his ice cream by feeding it to volunteers and asking them to hop on an exercise bike. The experiment demonstrated that the "ice cream improved the participants’ vascular function and physical performance."
While not actually available for retail, the performance-boosting gelato could pave the way for other functional dessert recipes.
