Prison-Transformed Luxe Hotels

Hoshino Resorts Plans to Alter the Nara Prison into a Resort

Japan's Hoshino Resorts has presented its plans to transform what was once the Nara Prison into a premium hotel to open its doors to guests in Spring 2026. The unique project falls under the Hoshinoya Group and the upcoming Hoshinoya Nara Prison will feature a Haviland System.

This is a central guard tower that is covered by radial wings of cells, honoring the idea of a modern prison space as a nod to its original architecture. The historic building also remains intact throughout the entire renovation process. The team is also transforming the solitary confinement cells to be turned into 48 elevated guest rooms. Some accommodations in the plan include a restaurant, lounge, and museum that educates visitors on the history.
