Meant to be disturbing and frightening, the horse design installation series by Berlinde De Bruyckere is very unsettling, particularly to anyone who is an animal-lover.
It is evident to see, even from a distance, that there is something not quite right about her horse-like figures. Not one is standing tall and proud like the horse sculptures many people are used to seeing, they are either hunched over themselves or toppled over in an unnatural way. Upon closer inspection, it can be noted that some of them are mutilated and missing limbs, like a war horse who has just barely survived a gruesome battle.
Those who like the thrill of the uncertain and bizarre will appreciate how these horse design sculptures take something familiar and distort it into something truly horrific.
