The Hillsborough Residence Blends Modern Design with Sculptural Ceramics

— August 22, 2025 — Art & Design
The Hillsborough residence has been reimagined by Studio AHEAD in collaboration with Marmol Radziner, transforming a 6,000-square-foot mid-century home into a space that fuses art and architecture. Instead of erasing past alterations, the designers layered new ideas onto existing structures, creating a narrative that honors history while pointing toward the future. The project stands out for its extensive use of ceramics, which act as both functional and decorative anchors.

Pieces by renowned makers including Peter Voulkos, Heath Ceramics, Nathan Lynch, and Liza Riddle are showcased alongside tapestries by Josef Albers and sculptures by JB Blunk. A neutral palette of soft earth tones allows these works to command presence without overwhelming the architecture. One highlight is the redesigned primary bedroom, where the bed now faces sweeping landscape views and incorporates a built-in workstation, merging everyday ritual with the surrounding environment in a seamless gesture.
