The Bahrain Heatwave pavilion at this year's Venice Architecture Biennale was the winner of the Golden Lion award this year. It is made to bring attention to the rising global temperatures by adding a cooling ceiling hanging over seating. The pavilion has a central column that is connected to chains to support the cooled ceiling -- this cools the area underneath. It was made to focus on providing cooling for those who work labor-intensive jobs.
When accepting the Golden Lion award, Al Khalifa shared, "The theme of the pavilion is a very relevant subject, not just to Bahrain but on a global scale. The term heatwave is a very common term we hear in the media, in news and even amongst our conversations at home. It is a stress to our urban centres and local communities, and the pavilion aimed to address those issues through an innovative technique."
