As news of a Banksy arrest hit the Internet yesterday, so too did one of his latest works, Girl with a Pierced Eardrum. Although the British street artist's arrest was a hoax and he is not in fact Liverpool-born Paul Homer, this work of art is completely legitimate. Inspired by Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer’s famous Girl with a Pearl Earring, the graffiti piece makes on crucial change.
In place of the classic pearl earring is an outdoor ADT security alarm. Thus, the Girl with a Pierced Eardrum can be construed in a number of different ways. Of course, such interpretations are left up to the viewer. Located in Banksy's hometown of Bristol, United Kingdom, the street art is nevertheless as soulful and beautiful as the original work that it pays tribute to.
