ŠKoda DuoBell Uses Frequency Design to Bypass ANC Headphones

— April 10, 2026 — Lifestyle
The Škoda DuoBell is a mechanical bicycle bell engineered to remain audible to pedestrians wearing noise-cancelling headphones. The project was developed by Škoda in collaboration with researchers and audiologists from the University of Salford, focusing on improving urban cycling safety. The bell operates without digital components and applies acoustic research to a traditional cycling accessory.

The design uses two resonators tuned to different frequencies, including a narrow band between 750 and 780 Hz identified as less affected by active noise cancellation. A custom hammer mechanism produces rapid and irregular strikes, generating sound patterns that ANC systems cannot suppress effectively. Testing showed that the bell increases detection distance by up to 22 metres compared to standard bicycle bells.

Trend Themes
1. Acoustic Design for ANC - A focus on acoustic profiles that bypass active noise cancellation opens pathways for non-digital sound signaling tailored to modern listening devices.
2. Mechanical Tech Resurgence - Renewed interest in purely mechanical mechanisms highlights potential for robust, low-maintenance safety products that function independently of electronics.
3. Frequency-targeted Safety Signals - Exploiting narrow frequency bands less affected by ANC suggests new classes of audible alerts optimized for human detection in noisy, tech-saturated environments.
Industry Implications
1. Urban Mobility - Cycling and micromobility sectors could integrate acoustically optimized alert systems to enhance vulnerable road-user visibility and detection distances.
2. Consumer Electronics - Headphone and wearable manufacturers may need to consider external-sound compatibility, creating opportunities for collaborative hardware-acoustic standards.
3. Public Safety Infrastructure - Municipal planning and street-safety products stand to benefit from signal design that improves pedestrian awareness without increasing noise pollution.
