Jarring Humanimal Portraiture

This Davide Luciano Series is a Touch Sheepish

Montreal-based photographer and artist David Luciano’s recent series ‘Sheep Nation Portraits’ is exactly what its name suggests it is: portraits of sheep-like people.

Luciano is a fine-art and conceptual photographer as well as a filmmaker. Combining all these approaches, he creates large prints that evoke a distinctly cinematic feel. Each piece is planned down to the most obscure detail in order to faithfully realize his concept. As demonstrated by the work featured here, this meticulous process pays off.

The portraits take themselves seriously. While it would be tempting to turn a concept like sheep-human hybrids into a joke, the pieces aim to be compelling and thoughtful. This juxtaposition of the absurd with the serious highlights both aspects, leaving the viewer with a slew of imagery they will not soon forget.
