App-Monitored Futuristic Supermarkets

The Carrefour Smartphone App Eliminates Checkout Lines

The Carrefour smartphone app transformed a supermarket in Dubai into the Middle East's first futuristic shopping experience. The experimental shop, Carrefour City+, tracks shoppers' movement with a sophisticated system through its eponymous app.

The app eliminates the need for checkout lines as it includes a built-in purchasing feature. Located in one of Dubai's popular malls, customers receive their receipts within minutes of leaving the store on their smartphones. To use the app, customers must grant Carrefour permission to collect their information, which is privately stored as per company policy.

Hanie Weiss, chief operating officer at Majid Al Futtaim, the franchise that operates Carrefour in the Middle East, believes that futuristic supermarkets will become the norm. He envisions highly automated shopping experiences in the coming future.
