Swedish City Malmö Introduces a Buttcoin ‘Crypto’ Program

The city of Malmö in Sweden has recently launched a novel cleaning initiative aimed at promoting responsible disposal of cigarette butts, offering residents the opportunity to earn a virtual currency known as Buttcoin. Building upon the success of the previous "moaning bins" campaign, which encouraged citizens to properly dispose of waste, this new program incentivizes smokers to contribute to a cleaner environment.

By depositing their cigarette butts in designated ashtrays, participants can earn 800 Buttcoins for each butt collected. The value of 800 Buttcoins aligns with the local currency fine imposed for littering, providing a tangible reward for responsible behavior.

By incorporating gamification principles and utilizing virtual currency, the city of Malmö aims to engage its residents and foster a sense of civic responsibility regarding waste management.
