StudioAC, a Toronto-based interdisciplinary architectural practice led by Andrew Hill and Jennifer Kudlats, has completed the Bellwoods Residence. This project in Toronto's West End organizes the home around a vertical light slot slicing through the building to bring daylight from a second-level roof into the ground floor. This, in turn, creates a clear organizational spine while emphasizing material contrast and the role of natural light in shaping spatial experience.
The ground floor of the Bellwoods Residence is wrapped in wood to form a singular enclosure framing the primary living spaces, with concrete floors anchoring a sunken living room that connects to a sunken exterior patio. The light slot is flanked by white material intentionally distinguished from the surrounding wood to highlight the interplay between solid and void, as daylight moves through the opening to animate the wood and concrete surfaces with shifting patterns of shadow and light.
