Ford will collaborate with McDonald's to turn bean husks from used coffee beans into car components. Some of the car parts that Ford can produce from coffee bean husks include headlamp housings and more. Additionally, car parts created from the used coffee beans will be 20% lighter than conventional parts.
Every year, the fast food chain produces 62 million pounds of coffee bean husks, which means Ford will have a lot of material to work with.
The coffee bean husks are able to be transformed into car parts through heating with low oxygen, following that the material is mixed with plastics and additives. The new process is 25% more energy efficient than the previous manufacturing process.
