This bank restoration in Chicago oversaw the conversion of this historic financial office into an exhibition and event space. The opening of the space will be part of the Chicago Architecture Biennal, an art and design event across the city.
The once busy and vibrant bank slowly deteriorated in recent years, which prompted artist and urban planner Theaster Gates Jr. to kick-start a project to repurpose the building. After completing the bank restoration, Gates want to use the space as a multidisciplinary platform that celebrates not only art and design but black culture as well. The space opens to the public with an exhibition from Portuguese artist Carlos Bunga. Future exhibitions will include 60,000 glass lantern slides and the late DJ Frankie Knuckles' vinyl collection will also be displayed.
