Surreal Festival Playgrounds

Architensions Debuts a Steel-Framed Playground at Coachella

Architensions designed a series of colorful steel-framed towers to crate a playground installation at the California music festival Coachella. The architecture studio designed the surreal structure to create a point of interest for festival attendees.

The installation is dubbed the Playground and boasts four towers ranging from 42 to 56 feet. Each is intersected by lattices of horizontal steel. The towers take cues from Dutch painter Constant Nieuwenhuys' visual utopia New Babylon and the work of Italian architect Aldo Rossi.

The architects on the project used dichroic film, mirror film, and polycarbonate sheets to create a vibrant installation. According to the lead architect, the Playground "provides an opportunity to experience a leisure space without the use of technology, simply by interacting with the space and its materiality."
