Cryptocurrency and art have finally come together thanks to artist Andy Bauch. Bauch's newest series, New Money, fuses the two subjects with works that use abstract patterns constructed from LEGO bricks. The resulting pieces are beautifully abstract and masterfully blend color and shape in a digital aesthetic. While the pieces are visually striking, the buzz around the pieces has more to do with the hidden crypto-wallet hidden in each piece.
Andy Bauch first started playing around with cryptocurrencies in 2013 and began integrating the currency into his works in 2016. New Money is the first official showing of this fusion and each piece featured in the collection has a secret key to various types of cryptocurrency in a digital wallet. To create each piece, Bauch first fed the key into an algorithm that turned it into an image. This process was done multiple times until Bauch found an image he liked, then the key was rigorously tested to ensure it worked in reverse. Once the image passed all these checks, Bauch then assembled the images out of LEGO bricks.
