United Airlines has announced a major airline expansion at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. The development includes a new $177-million Ground Service Equipment Maintenance Facility and a $16-million Technical Operations Training Center. These developments are part of the airline’s broader $3.5 billion investment in Houston, which reinforces its position as the city’s largest carrier with over 14,000 employees and 500 daily flights.
The Ground Service Equipment Maintenance Facility is expected to open in 2027 and will be twice the size of the current structure. Designed to meet LEED Silver sustainability standards, the building will support United’s fleet of over 1,800 ground vehicles through its expanded repair, storage, and workspace capacity. It will also accommodate a growing fleet of electric ground service equipment.
The newly opened Technical Operations Training Center is a 91,000-square-foot facility designed to prepare employees for maintaining United’s expanding fleet, which will include hundreds of new aircraft by 2032. The center offers hands-on training in sheet metal and composite repairs, engine inspections, and troubleshooting via advanced simulators.
