Advanced Digital Flight Communications

Boeing and United Airlines Boast an Aviation Test Program

Boeing and United Airlines have recently completed a collaborative test program focused on advancing the core data communication systems used in aviation. The partners used a United 737-8 aircraft designated as the 2025 ecoDemonstrator Explorer.

Boeing and United Airlines evaluated the Internet Protocol Suite (IPS), an internet-based framework designed to replace or augment older, lower-bandwidth communication protocols. The testing, which was conducted over a two-week period in October and November 2025 with flights operating from Houston, USA, and Edinburgh, Scotland, marks a significant step toward modernizing the foundational digital infrastructure for air traffic management.

The program's scope was notably broad, involving a consortium of industry suppliers like Collins Aerospace and Honeywell, communications service providers such as SITA, Thales, and Viasat, and key government and research bodies including the European Space Agency (ESA), the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and NASA.
