The ActiveProtective is an airbag belt that is designed to deploy in the event of falls, reducing damage to seniors' hip bones. Falls are a huge cause of hip injuries among seniors, and this product aims to reduce the damage they wreak.
The ActiveProtective is designed to be worn like a belt either beneath or on top of clothing. It is equipped with on-board 3D motion sensors that detect falling motions, and cause a cold gas inflator -- the same kind used in seatbelt-mounted airbags -- to deploy along the sides of the hips. When the wearer hits the ground, impact on the hip bones is reduced by as much as 90%.
The device is currently undergoing functional testing using a replica of a 90-year-old woman. It could become available commercially at the end of 2016.
