The Ai Weiwei About Silk exhibition is a site-specific installation created by Ai Weiwei in collaboration with Rubelli, presented during Milan Design Week at the brand’s showroom. The project marks the artist’s first use of silk as a primary medium, translating his visual language into large-scale woven textiles. The installation features detailed silk fabrics embedded with recurring motifs such as surveillance cameras, handcuffs, llamas, and the Twitter bird, all integrated into dense patterned compositions.
The exhibition includes a sculptural sofa upholstered in silk based on the artist’s sketches, alongside additional rooms displaying archival references and textile pieces linking Chinese and Venetian silk traditions. A separate section presents the “Finger” motif within the woven works, while a documentary film by Felipe Sanguinetti documents the development process behind the collaboration. The installation is on view at Rubelli’s Via Fatebenefratelli showroom in Milan through mid-May 2026.
