Reusable Food Packaging Systems

Compass Group Expands Its Cauli Smart Reusable System

Compass Group UK & Ireland expanded deployment of Cauli's technology-enabled reusable food and drink system, featuring packaging designed to be reused up to 400 times. The rollout follows a proof-of-concept across multiple Compass sectors and includes reusable coffee cups, takeaway boxes and pizza boxes, each embedded with a unique digital ID to improve traceability and maximize product lifespan.

The system combines tracking technology with AI-powered reverse vending machines that allow customers to borrow and return containers more seamlessly while providing data on packaging circulation. Compass said the initiative has already eliminated more than 383,000 single-use packaging items.

For consumers, the expanded program offers a more convenient reusable packaging experience while reducing reliance on disposable foodservice containers. The rollout reflects the growing adoption of technology-enabled circular packaging systems that use digital tracking to make large-scale reuse more practical.

Digitized Reuse Systems
Embedded IDs and circulation data make reusable packaging networks more scalable, creating openings for software platforms that manage assets across high-volume foodservice environments.
AI Return Infrastructure
Smart reverse vending machines reduce friction in container returns, signaling potential for automated service hubs that support circular consumption in campuses, offices and public venues.
Traceable Foodservice Packaging
Packaging built for hundreds of uses with item-level tracking enables new models for lifespan optimization, loss prevention and sustainability reporting.

Who This Affects Most
